Ingersoll Rand's Dosatron pumps are making life better for patients and staff at the St. Matia Mulumba Irundu Health Center III in Buyende district, in Uganda. Irundu Health Center, which provides basic preventive and curative services for the catchment of 21,000 people in the community, has operated without water for the past three years. Ingersoll Rand and the nonprofit Engineers Without Borders (EWB) partner to globally focus on sustainable community development and infrastructure. EWB designed a new water system, and Ingersoll Rand donated Dosatron chlorination pumps to provide clean drinking water, ensuring patients and staff have access to water free from contamination.
The Irundu Health Center receives an average of 10 patients per day and offers inpatient and outpatient services with 12 staff, all without running water, sanitation and hygiene resources due to water stability challenges. The alternative rainwater harvest system provided inconsistent access to water, which was of poor quality. Both patients and staff retrieved water from a community borehole about a kilometre away to meet the needs at the health facility.
Engineers Without Borders worked with a local nongovernmental medical bureau to conduct assessments of the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) situation in Irundu and provided technical assistance to improve access to safe WASH and waste management in the healthcare facility.
The Dosatron team dispatched two D8WL3000AF chlorine-dosing pumps to EWB to make life better for the Irundu community. These standard pumps treat 8,000 liters (40 gallons) per hour and will provide safe, treated drinking water for at least the next five years.
Christophe Ducher, market leader for Dosatron water treatment in Precision & Science Technologies, collaborated with the EWB team in Uganda to assess the current water quality, design a pump solution to meet the needs of the healthcare facility and provide installation instructions for the local team. "Dosatron pumps are the ideal solution for water treatment in remote areas," said Christophe. "The pumps operate without electricity, using the flow of water as the power source. The Irundu Health Center will now have safe, treated water available to the patients and staff in the community. We are proud to support EWB and provide WASH services to make life better in Uganda."
Ingersoll Rand delivered Dosatron pumps as part of its environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment to stockholders to provide access to clean drinking water. As partners, Ingersoll Rand supports Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to globally focus on sustainable community development and infrastructure. EWB, a nonprofit humanitarian organization, supports building a better world through engineering projects that help lift communities out of poverty. Ingersoll Rand will help build sustainable water, sanitation, energy and disaster response solutions for underserved communities around the world.
